What do you expect?

I was going to save this for the end of the year but I’d thought I’d give you mid year update on sort of what it takes to successfully promote a new book guerilla style.

What does that mean exactly? It means risking everything to make yourself, your story and your book a success. It’s June 4th, approximately six months since my novel, Thomas Riley, came out. So far, I’ve been to 20 different cities, had 25 events, been to 2 countries, traveled 16,150 miles (that’s and average of 88.5 miles traveled every day for book promotion only), and stayed in 17 hotels. This is just 2010 mind you. Below is a map of the states I’ve had events in so far:

By year’s end the map will look more like this:

The point of all this is there are massive amounts of books published every year. I’ve heard anywhere from 100,000 to 250,000. How many of those books are actually successful? Not many. The idea here was born out of a touring band mentality. If you work your butt off, risk everything and have a good story, you can’t be ignored. You have to do things that other authors won’t do or are afraid to do. For those serious about making an impact with writing, fear begats failure. Do everything you can. Sacrifice will become your motto. If this is a labor of love then you should enjoy every bit of it. My reward has been ten fold compared to what I’ve given up. I’ve seen the country, I’ve truly met the most amazing people on Earth, and I’ve sold a happy amount of books along the way.

So go forth, believe in yourself like no one else will and turn the world upside down.

Gearing up for the Holiday Season

Ghost LightWhat a great week this past one was! I am currently sitting in a comfy bed that is not my own. Why does that matter to you? Well, today was supposed to be Mary Cunningham’s day to tell you about her short story “Ghost Light,” but I had Mary out in the blazing Georgia sun for the last two days, selling her Cynthia’s Attic Books at the Decatur Book Festival. She is currently somewhere in the house fast asleep. Selling a hundred plus books in two days is exhausting.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Karen Syed aka Alexis Hart. I am the founder and president of Echelon Press. I’m also an author. For as far back as I can remember I’ve been a story teller. Nothing pleases me more than to entertain others. I think that’s why I knew I was destined to become a writer. I love to write almost as much as I love to talk.

For me, the short story is king. There is nothing more thrilling to me than to  be able to sit down and read a full story, with a beginning, a middle, and an end, and it not take hours or days. Don’t get me wrong, I love books, live for them, but I adore short stories. I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve worked so hard to offer a great place for writers to get their short stories published.

I won’t take up a lot of your time going on about all kinds of stuff you don’t really care about, but I want you to know that we are committed to bringing you the very best quality shorts and novellas we can find at the best prices. Hey, we love you guys and gals. We want to make you happy.

Now that I have said that, why don’t you make me happy and go buy one of my short stories. I have a few out there, but I’ll give you the link to my favorite.

I think that Devlin’s Wicked Wish is one of my very best stories. It first appeared in print in the “Romancing the Holidays” Anthology (Elan Press) but I’m pleased to offer it to you from Echelon Shorts for $1.00. Yup. I said, it, ONE LITTLE DOLLAR!! How could you not want to read it?

Here’s a little snippet to wet your whistle. Once you’ve read what it’s about you can hop on over and pick up a download to read. And when you’re done, I’d love to know what you think.

Devlin's Wicked WishHappy Reading!

The moon is bright and love is in the air, but Devlin Wilde has no time for it. Nor does he give much thought to what might be missing from his empty life, until a New Orleans’ voodoo priestess offers him the deal of a lifetime–love–a hundred years in the future. “Bring my true love to me.” Level-headed Alayna Pedrieux never expected the wish she’d jokingly made during a Halloween ball to come true. But it had. Standing in her foyer was a man as handsome as the devil, and insisting he’s been brought forward in time. Together, Devlin and Alayna realize true love can exist, but to keep it one of them would have to give up everything.

Hopefully our couple of short stories will get you geared up for the holiday season that is right around the corner…halloween, that is!
