The Hanukkah Time Capsule

“The Hanukkah Time Capsule” is a short e-book published by Echelon Press Shorts on December 9, 2009, as part of its “12 Days of Christmas” initiative.

In my Catholic household, Christmas Eve was the highlight, it was when we had our big meal and opened the presents. We ended the celebrations with the Midnight Mass and the welcoming of Baby Jesus into the world. And then we went home and slept, and when we woke up on Christmas day we had another big meal… but the mystery and magic were already over.

Although I was raised in a Christian culture, or perhaps because I was raised in a Christian culture, I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of Hanukkah, where the celebrations take place over eight nights (eight!!!!). Imagine that, eight nights of celebrations and magic! So, I started researching…

… and guess what! The more I learnt about Hanukkah, the more similarities I found with Christmas. The lighting of candles, the green wreaths, the family gatherings, the presents, even the Hanukkah festive food – it all sounded strangely similar to the traditions I grew up with.

So there you have it: two celebrations at roughly the same time of the year. They are of very different origin, yet they share what’s at the very heart and core of them. This festive season, we can celebrate our differences and rejoice how much we have in common.

I’m hoping my story, “The Hanukkah Time Capsule”, does justice to this discovery.
